New Delhi: Maldives President Mohammad Muizhu sent a message that the relationship between the two countries is improving rapidly by attending Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony and official dinner.
However, a parliamentary committee of the Maldives on Monday set up an inquiry committee headed by President Ibrahim Solih to examine the four agreements signed with India, citing threats to sovereignty and independence.
Hitadhu Central MP Ahmed Azan proposed to review all agreements signed between Maldives and India under Solih’s administration.
Agreements between India and the Maldives include a hydrography agreement, the Uthuru Thilaphalhu (UTF) dockyard being built with Indian grant assistance and Dornier aircraft gifted by India to the Maldives Defense Force for humanitarian, search and rescue operations.
“Today, Parliament’s National Security Services Committee decided to hold a parliamentary inquiry to investigate the actions taken by the administration of President Solih to undermine the sovereignty and independence of the Maldives,” Ahmed Azan said on Monday.
