Bengaluru : Sociologists, activists and legal experts have expressed displeasure with the ‘one nation, one election’ concept being discussed by the central government.

This concept is being floated to reduce election costs and save time by allowing voters to vote for MPs and MLAs on a single day across India, but, it is very risky. If an anti-people government comes to power, the citizens will have to endure for five years. Concerned that the move would destroy diversity, independence of states, multiple representation and ultimately the electoral system.

Former Chairman of Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission H Kantharaju also expressed a similar opinion. He said that this is an attack on the union system.

This is a very serious matter. Before taking any decision, it should be discussed in detail. Already we have accepted the union system. We have taken into consideration the constitutional provisions of various countries. Thus, ‘one nation and one election’ is not feasible in India.

Meanwhile, Senior Legal Advisor of the Supreme Court, MT Nanaiah, has expressed his support for this concept.

‘One nation, one election’ not only saves election expenses but also saves manpower. He also said that it will reduce the pressure on the Election Commission.

People used to leave work and go to other states during elections. He said that if there is one nation, one election, voting can also be done for the state assembly elections during the Lok Sabha elections.
